Activity Ideas: Places to go - Peterborough

Monday, June 1, 2009

Peterborough might not sound like an obvious choice of place to visit but the area has historical sites, nature trails and adrenaline sports aplenty.

Groups can watch re-enactments and learn new skills, such as willow sculpture, at the Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre, where the oldest wheel in Britain was found.

Alternatively, they could whizz around the 45-mile Green Wheel cycle path that runs through the countryside and takes in nature trails.

If your group would like to try something more sedate, they can take a trip on a steam engine at Nene Valley Railway or walk through nearby Sacrewell Farm and Country Centre to see animals and a working watermill. There are also cultural and historical places of interest, including the Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery and the 13th-century Peterborough Cathedral.

How to get there

By train: Trains run from various parts of the UK. Journey time from London is 50 minutes, and from York and Leeds takes about two hours.

By car: Peterborough can be reached via the A1, the A14 and the A47. Coaches can park in the city centre.
