Murders of children and young people have risen by almost a third in the last year.
Home Office figures have shown that there were at least 68 children under the age of 16 killed in 2006/07, an increase of 31 per cent on the previous year.
The increase is largely due to a rise in the number of children who were killed by their parents, which rose to 33 in 2006/07 from 24 in 2005/06.
