A survey of 13- to 19-year-olds has found Valentine's Day leads to a loss in self-esteem and increasing levels of anxiety.
Around half of the thousand young people who were interviewed in the run up to the day said it makes them feel anxious or depressed.
The research, which was carried out by charity 4Children, also highlighted wider emotional concerns, with 45 per cent citing love and relationships as their greatest worry.
Anne Longfield, chief executive of the charity, said: "Valentine's Day is meant to be a day for love and sharing but for an increasing number of teenagers it's just one added headache to add to their already stressful lives."
