Windsor and Maidenhead's youth offending team has been praised following its latest visit by HM Probation Service inspectors.

In terms of safeguarding young offenders and the public, as well as reducing reoffending, the team received above average marks across the board, with inspectors finding only minimum improvements needed.

The team’s work to ensure the public was protected was carried out well in 81 per cent of the time, compared to an England and Wales average of just 63 per cent.

Reoffending work was carried out well 86 per cent of the time, just one per cent less than the highest ever percentage handed out in this category and 16 per cent above the England and Wales average.

Inspectors found that the team had a strong partnership with local schools, health services and the area’s specialist Family Intervention Project. This "resulted in children and young people having support within the community once their orders had ended".

They also worked well to highlight and support the most vulnerable young offenders.

Among improvements inspectors want to see are more home visits and managers overseeing and screening decisions more frequently.

Meanwhile, youth offending work in Oxfordshire has received a less favourable report following its recent inspection. Its work to safeguard the public was carried out well just 56 per cent of the time. Work to combat reoffending was also below average, carried out well only 68 per cent of the time.
