CSA is 'unlikely to collect' 2.2bn

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

The Child Support Agency (CSA) has admitted it is unlikely to be able to collect around 2.2bn pounds of unpaid child maintenance.

Latest quarterly figures for the agency reveal the total owed by non-resident parents now stands at £3.8bn, up £120m on last year.

Of this, about £2.2bn is classed as probably uncollectable, due to lack of contact with the non-resident parent by the agency or because payments are suspended, until such time as the individual's circumstances change.

The Conservatives said the latest figures are further evidence the CSA is failing to ensure non-resident parents make payments. Chris Grayling, the shadow work and pensions secretary, said a contributing factor was non-resident parents living abroad and not making payments.
