Where might you hear it: In early years settings.
What does it mean? EYPS is a relatively new qualification for practitioners working in early years settings. Delivered by the Children's Workforce Development Council, it is part of the government's vision to create a graduate-led early years workforce delivering high-quality and affordable childcare.
An Early Years Professional (EYP) is supposed to be responsible for managing and leading play, care and learning in a setting. This is as well as understanding, developing and improving practice while always inspiring others.
The latest survey of fully trained EYPs did not paint a rosy picture of the position. Three hundred responses showed that many EYPs are still not getting the pay they feel matches their qualifications. Money from the Graduate Leader Fund is not always reaching the right places and there is still a lack of parity between EYPS and qualified teacher status.
How to use it: Aspect, the union representing EYPs, will tell you to use the acronym with the respect it deserves. This advice extends to the very top as the government is in danger of undermining its vision of a high-quality workforce.
