Social Care: British Association of Social Workers slams government

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

The British Association of Social Workers has slammed the government for publishing a consultation on allegations of abuse against social care professionals, saying it is based on out-of-date information.

The consultation, published last week, aims to establish the effectiveness of government guidance on allegations of abuse and what impact it has had.

But the association's professional officer Nushra Mansuri said the Department for Children, Schools and Families consultation is based on out-of-date policies. She said the consultation talks about the Protection of Children Act List, which is to be replaced when a new vetting and barring system comes into force in Autumn 2008.

Mansuri said she spoke to the department before the consultation was published and was told the references to the Protection of Children Act List would be removed because of the forthcoming changes.

The consultation ends on 23 October.
