Teens create game against knife crime

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Young Londoners have created a video game warning teenagers of the dangers of knife crime.

The game, called Soul Control, was produced by a group of 20 young people aged 16-19 from across the capital as part of a project run by multimedia education company RollingSound.

The project was set up to give young people at risk of exclusion a chance to show off their creativity and was paid for with £19,000 from funding body Mediabox.

Soul Control centres on the life of a teenager on a London estate. Players interact with other characters in the street, such as families and friends, to show the long-term repercussions of crimes such as carrying knives or dealing drugs.

Ben Guiste, 17, who worked on the game said: "We wanted to show what it's like for young people, as well as showing how easy it is to get trapped in this kind of lifestyle."

Most of the young people involved in the project were unemployed and were taught skills in video game design.
