Too much has already been written about Alfie Patten. When the story of the "boy dad" broke, it quickly became The Sun's most popular online article ever. It recorded 3.9 million unique visitors in just one day - more than double the previous high of 1.6 million.

It's disappointing to hear of examples where the role of youth work is overlooked and under-appreciated. But sadly all too often this still is the case.

In current political debates, academic literature and media coverage, there is a risk of becoming convinced that young people are characterised by under-achievement, teenage pregnancy, mental ill-health, criminality, homelessness and substance misuse.

The Real IRA and the Continuity IRA claimed responsibility for the recent murders of soldiers and a police officer in Northern Ireland. But as they are perceived to be destabilising the peace settlement, it is important to hold on to the phenomenal progress that has been made in the province since the darkest days of the Troubles.

As young people walk into my cottage in north Wales, they see a poster of the ocean with a solitary boat tossing on the waves. On it there are the following words: "A ship in the harbour is safe, but that is not what ships were built for." My view of youth work is that it is quintessentially about "pushing the boat out", stretching young people's imagination, competence and experience beyond their comfort zones but not so far as to engender panic (and thereby cause them to retreat back to the safety of where they came from). For me, that is the fundamental skill of the youth worker in dealing with both the mental and physical activities of young people. When executed effectively, young people come to understand and consider risk and make informed choices accordingly.

I've become rather hardened to youth work projects. After writing about the youth sector for more than six years, it takes a lot for a project to really stand out from the crowd.

I recently read an online discussion between two youth workers. Although both held similar faith-based youth work roles, they had very different opinions about teenagers and how best to work with them.

Don't let the crunch crush young hopes

I heard the other day a very striking and rather sad fact from an expert in social demography: the section of the youth population who will bear the brunt of the current recession are largely the children of the young people who suffered disproportionately from recession of the 1980s. We may sometimes bemoan the generational continuity of unemployment through apparent cultures of benefit dependency but here we have a situation where unemployment is structurally conferred. As swathes of employers shed labour, it is younger, less qualified and more expendable employees who are first to be laid off. And those who were last in, first out during the days of The Specials' Ghost Town will see their children going through the same experiences.

The issue: Despite research which shows that a varied, adventurous approach to teaching stimulates different senses and can enhance young people's learning, most young people's educational experiences remain confined to the classroom.

After all the scandals in the armed forces about the brutality and humiliation that accompanied the initiation rites of new recruits, I wondered whether there might be any positive aspects to such procedures.

The reinvention of the Woodcraft Folk

I have always had a deep affection for the Woodcraft Folk. Though often considered rather quaint in recent years, and a little unfairly associated with pixies dressed in green tunics dancing around a fire in the woods, it was a youth organisation that pioneered work around internationalism, environment, participation, democracy and peace.
