    Opinion

This summer I spent two weeks watching the Olympic Games on TV. Inevitably, comparisons have been drawn between what took place in Beijing and what can be expected of London at the 2012 Olympics.

Tory policy still needs some improvements

There is a very real prospect that the next government will be a Conservative one. So it's encouraging that apart from the small matter of a global economic crisis, issues affecting children, young people and families took centre stage at the party's annual conference this week.

From the Frontline - Uniforms allow the person to shine through

Very few youth organisations nowadays require young people to wear uniforms. Organisations such as ourselves (St John Ambulance), the Scouts, the Guides and a handful of others stand apart because we believe there are benefits in young people dressing the same. But does this policy encourage people to join or does it achieve the opposite?

Youth services across the UK went into overdrive this summer. A whole of host of projects were set up, ranging from traditional sport schemes and youth festivals to more targeted support programmes for young people considered at risk.

From the Frontline - The net has boundless opportunities for us

One of the most misused words I hear is "empowerment" - often used without consideration to what "power" we are able to hand over. More recently "participation" is the shiny terminology used to express how committed we are to the involvement of young people, but here too I wonder how much thought staff give to how they participate in their field or what opportunities they have to influence policies, projects and so on.

    Opinion

It's hard to imagine nowadays a time when male youth workers outnumbered female youth workers. But back in the early 1980s it was not unusual for youth services to employ twice as many male youth workers as women.

As we read almost weekly of the death of another young person through violent crime, it is perhaps easy to forget that young people die, albeit fairly rarely, from a range of causes. When those young people have been associated with youth work projects, the immediate question is what can, or should, youth workers do?

The erosion of youth work under Labour

As government policies affect their work, youth workers are liable to react as if they are being picked on: "Why are 'they' treating us so unfairly?" To clarify what has happened to youth work since Labour took power in 1997, however, a much broader analysis is needed.

Don't rule out single-faith projects

Successfully reaching out to young people from minority groups is something that concerns all providers of youth services - both statutory and voluntary.

Why size isn't everything for youth centres

With all the talk about super youth centres, to be partly financed by dormant savings accounts, it might be time for some reflection on the question of size. Of course, in the past couple of years, there has been considerable celebration of places such as the Bolton Lads' and Girls' Club and an honour for its leader Jeremy Glover.

Role models inspire young people to aspire

Many young people feel that the world of work is a long way away. It's a tough challenge to get them to visualise what a successful career, tuned to their interests and talents, might look like. That is why it is essential they are provided with inspirational influences to raise aspirations and help them realise the opportunities available.
