Not all of the youth workers come from Mars

    Opinion

Some youth workers are from Venus and others are from Mars. You may not get the reference to a famous book on gender but the point remains that there are two kinds of exponents of something both camps call youth work but they clearly do not operate under the same canvas.

Can you remember life before the internet? For today's 16-year-olds, born in 1992, there has never been a time when it didn't exist. What's more, they have grown up with a mobile phone - and there has always been multi-channel television.

Happy New Year. I'm sure a few of you will be glad to be back at work just to get away from that wireless broadband router that won't connect to the internet.

Just when custody officers in young offender institutions are dressing down - into more relaxed trousers and track suit tops, from their previous quasi-military attire - so I notice that more and more youth services are requiring their workers dress in distinctive uniforms proclaiming their identity, if not their status.

Over the summer holidays I've had the privilege of working alongside more than 50 enthusiastic teenagers. These young people, who gave up their own time voluntarily, were helping to provide fun and memorable activities for hundreds of younger children. They sang, played sports, danced, did art and craft activities, and even got voted into a gunge tank on some occasions.

It's a bit much to expect governments to demonstrate consistency. As of last week, under Section 55 of the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Act 2009, UK Border Agency staff have a duty to consider and promote the welfare of children when exercising their functions. That's a welcome and long-anticipated development.

As a trainee journalist a decade ago, I was always taught to never accept quotes for articles by letter or fax. People write anodyne quotes, I was told, and you'll never get to find out the all-important "who, what, when, where, why and how" required for every story.

Today's employers want more than just academic and vocational skills. They are looking for well-rounded individuals with skills such as leadership, flexibility and problem-solving. Participation in positive activities helps young people build these skills and gives them the confidence to lead successful and happy lives.

Youth Work Now: Youth work provides a sanctuary

    Opinion

With all the discussion in youth work circles about a much tougher evaluation of outcomes, payment by results and mechanisms for using social impact bonds, I wonder if anyone has given a thought to one of the lesser stated roles of youth work: sanctuary.

Workers juggle the personal and the political

Times may change, but the challenge for something we call youth work remains the same. Most youth workers know that if it becomes too individualised (just focusing on supporting young people at a personal level) or too instrumentalised (expected to deliver a range of social objectives, such as crime prevention), it ceases to be youth work.
