I have been a keen supporter of Sure Start from the start. It seemed obvious to me from what I saw in Sure Start centres that the most disadvantaged children would not only get a better start in life, but that this would have a lasting beneficial impact.

We all know the benefits of early education. The government's desire to extend the free entitlement to more two-year-olds is therefore laudable, but I'm not sure it's currently deliverable.

The biggest intrusion by the state into family life is the removal of a child from its birth parents. So it is absolutely right that the courts should make the final decision, whether it is for a temporary or a permanent arrangement. However, it is paramount that there are proper checks because there are judgments to be made that are not always obvious.

Almost all of us love our children - even though they are occasionally difficult, temperamental or just obstreperous. We love them for what they are, whether that includes abilities or disabilities, and we would not have it any other way. Of all I have done, I am proudest of my children and what they have achieved - although, of course, it was not just me!

Nine months after its conception last March, the government's youth policy arrived into this world six days before Christmas, not exactly kicking and screaming and without much fanfare. Positive for Youth was born after what seemed an interminable but thoroughgoing consultation with the youth sector and young people alike.
